Haddam-Killingworth Intermediate School (HKIS) serves students in grades 4 and 5 within a unique upper-elementary setting, existing alongside the middle school, designed to meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of children at this important stage. With a supportive structure of just two teachers sharing the responsibility for a child’s core instruction, students experience the comfort of a homeroom community along with the opportunity to learn from multiple teachers. Each day begins with a morning meeting, helping to build connections and set a positive tone for learning.

At HKIS, students engage in a rigorous academic program in English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. We also leverage the resources of the middle school to give our students opportunities not normally available to elementary students. Their learning is enriched by applied academics such as art, music, world languages, physical education, coding, design-build, and practical arts. Personalized Learning Time is built into every day, giving students opportunities for academic support, enrichment, instrument lessons, or
independent exploration in our Maker Space and Media Center. This balance allows children to strengthen core skills while also discovering new interests and talents.

Beyond the classroom, HKIS offers a wide variety of clubs, activities, and performing arts opportunities, encouraging students to connect with peers, explore their creativity, and stay active. Recess, extracurricular programs, and special events foster friendships and help students develop confidence in a safe and welcoming environment. Our school community values kindness, respect, effort, responsibility, and fun — principles captured in our Cougar Pledge, which students and staff live out each day.

We designed HKIS to be the best school we can offer for nine, ten and eleven-year-olds as they come together from the two towns. It is a place where students are challenged academically while also being supported as growing individuals. By providing the right mix of structure, exploration, and care, we prepare our fourth and fifth graders to thrive in school and in life.
